The app developers designed BE THE ONE to invite users to share their view and take action on policies and issues relating to of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. This topic is addressed for educational purposes and community-level policy change. All images are reviewed and approved before posting. No graphic or intense images will be posted.
MY VIEW promotes community-level policy change by asking users to share their view of substance
abuse and prevention initiatives by capturing characteristics of their environment and experiences
through photography. This community-driven substance abuse assessment and health promotion tool is based on a technique referred to as “photovoice”. Photovoice can give a voice to someone that may otherwise feel unheard and/or powerless by providing an opportunity to record and reflect on their
experiences and conditions of their community – whether + or – and to use critical thinking and
analyze their photo and the circumstances that shaped the image. Additionally, photovoice allows the
user to contribute important data on the problems facing the community. This data can help make a
visual “case for change” and help regional coalitions to reach policy makers and influence change that
will improve community conditions.
MY ACTIONS educate and inform users and recruit participation within their regional coalition by
inviting users to BE the ONE to HELP, CHECK, ASK and JOIN
o Be the one to HELP promote life-saving legislation that protects Good Samaritans to “don’t think twice – help save a life”. Prompting action when the user is with someone that has passed out due to alcohol or drug use and listing the required steps to avoid prosecution: Call 911 – stay with your friend – talk with authorities
o Be the One to CHECK is for those that are concerned about their own drinking or drug use OR that of a friend or loved one and want to complete a brief quiz to see if there is a risk of problem substance use.
This portion of the app contains 2 behavioral health quizzes approved by the American Academy of
Pediatrics and the National Institute of Health.
1. For Under 21 – which uses the CRAFFT assessment: CRAFFT is a behavioral health screening tool recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Substance Abuse for use with adolescents under the age of 21. It consists of a series of 6 questions developed to screen adolescents for high risk alcohol and other drug use disorders simultaneously. It is meant to assess whether a longer conversation about the context of use, frequency, and other risks and consequences of alcohol and other drug use is warranted.
2. For 21 and over which uses the 4 question CAGE assessment a validated screening technique to detect problem behavior related to substance use and the potential for substance use disorders. Both surveys end with an assessment score that provides brief analysis that is not valid for diagnosis rather it serves as a screening and will indicate if the responses warrant further investigation by a licensed professional.
- Be the one to ASK is a user driven - ever evolving frequently asked question section that is divided by the 4
state priorities. Users submit questions and they are answered by a Certified Prevention Specialist.
